Motion capture has been used by game studios and Hollywood filmmakers for years, but it hasn’t been cheap and accessible for the home market. Noitom set to change some of those rules in 2014, with a successful Kickstarter campaign for Perception Neuron, a relatively inexpensive motion capture system that has since become widely used by filmmakers, animators, game developers, athletes, researchers and medical professionals. For its upcoming The Gallery: Call of the Starseed, it's using HTC's Vive virtual reality headset for motion capture, not just gameplay. The headset immerses actors in a scene while giving them more helpful teleprompting and visual cues. Vici and VR-China joined together to create a VR Zone at the Hangzhou Culutural Expo under a new meetup platform named VR Scene. They ran a 110 meter booth and invited some friends to join them. For crowd simulation, the team used new software, a plug-in for Maya called Miarmy, which Rouleau found well-built and artist-friendly, helping them to create realistic-looking results. They also did MoCap, using a system that is new to them, Perception Neuron by Noitom.

Another interesting feature is the data fusion from multiple sensors or controllers. For example, we could use the HTC Vive controllers in our hands and be tracked by Kinect, or wear a Perception Neuron sensor kit to capture our full body. That info will be translated to the user's avatar and can be useful not only to increase the feeling of presence, but also to interact with the world.

The Perception Neuron is a very cool piece of tech – a tiny block no larger than a sugar cube that contains an accelerometer, a gyroscope and a magnetic tracker. On its own, it’s an impressive testament to the power of miniaturization, but when synced with up to 31 other Neurons, it allows for remarkably accurate full-body motion tracking. The device is being billed as an ideal companion to the Oculus Rift, but while I’m not entirely convinced that it will work in the consumer marketplace, I do see it having a very positive effect on the indie development scene.

Tobias Baumann is the director of game development for Perception Neuron, which is an IMU-based motion capture system. It might eventually be used as a VR input device, but Tobias acknowledges that the current price for the full system is a bit steep to be used for anything than a motion capture system at first.

The crowd-funding scene has been flooded with hopeful virtual reality (VR) projects over the past few years. From software to hardware, creators have been hoping to imitate the success Oculus VR had with its Oculus Rift, raising nearly $2.5 million USD back in 2012. In terms of hardware, many earlier campaigns saw great success; Sixense secured over $600,000 for its STEM motion controller and YEI Technology raised over $320,000 for PrioVR. On the show floor I tried out a really cool full body motion tracking system from Perception Neuron. The system uses a number of small modular sensors attached to straps and gloves to track individual limbs down to the fingers. When combined with VR it gives you an actual sense of presence in the virtual world. I think they still have a long way to go in terms of calibration and implementing good demos, but what I tried was still very impressive.

I stretched out my arm and wiggled each of the fingers on my right hand individually; everything seemed to be working just fine. As I turned my head back and forth, I marveled at the bright colors and familiar games surrounding me. There were buckets for me to throw a ball into and cans stacked in a pyramid ready to be knocked over. I reached down and curled my fingers around a small ball at my side. Once I lifted my hand up, the ball came with it and I tossed it into one of the nearby buckets. Every visual and auditory signal my mind was receiving told me I was literally standing in the middle of an outdoor carnival setting, but I wasn’t.

Another very modular wireless motion tracking system! Each kit comes with a set of points that can either be placed individually, or set into a networked system used to control a rigged avatar directly. Helios backed this project late last year on Kickstarter. They haven’t fullfilled backer’s orders yet, but from what I saw at GDC, it is definitely ready!

By far the most interesting thing I saw at GDC this year (admittedly with only an Exhibitor/Expo pass, so I can’t speak for any of the talks) was a motion capture system called Perception Neuron created by Noitom. Instead of using a complicated array of high-speed cameras that is difficult and expensive to set up and configure, it uses a series of inertial sensors to determine the position of various joints.

Having tried out a demo for something called the Perception Neuron in a demo that allowed me to fly around in a virtual world with an Oculus Rift DK2 on my head and a section of the Neuron covering just my left arm – I can fully see the concern that some people have regarding motion sickness in these VR environments. The lower I got to the ground and the faster I went, the more parallax occurred and the more my brain got confused because the motion I was seeing didn’t correspond the motion that my inner-ear was feeling.

Last month VRFocus reported on the launch of a Kickstarter crowd-funding campaign for an intriguing virtual reality (VR) compatible motion tracking system named Perception Neuron. The system uses tiny units known as Neurons placed around a user’s body for accurate tracking. The developers were looking for $250,000 USD to fund the production of the kit. Now the team has passed that base goal, and is well on its way towards a new $300,000 stretch goal which is teasing some interesting updates for the technology.

Check this one out. It will let you do motion capture at a very affordable price. I’m looking forward to seeing what can be done with hand gestures to control another process or user interface. Plus it’s an awesome way to immerse yourself in virtual reality, as long as you have supporting software. Supposedly this is the second generation of their motion capture product, but this version is intended for consumers / independent developers.
